Every week, we’ll provide updates for each division. The biggest contenders and/or closest races will receive the greatest amount of attention.

Bold = playoff contender; Italics = likely lottery fodder.

Southeast Division outlook (February 21 -27)

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (34-18-7 for 75 pts; 59 Games Played)

Current streak: Three straight losses.

Week ahead: Home vs. Phoenix (Wednesday), home vs. New Jersey (Friday) and @ NY Rangers (Sunday.)

Thoughts: After a bad week, the Lightning are now only 5-3-2 in the first 10 games of their mammoth 12-game homestand. That being said, two wins would mean that they earned 16 out of a possible 24 points. They need to stock them up, because the Capitals are starting look like their old, dangerous selves again.

2. Washington Capitals (31-19-10 for 72 pts; 60 GP)

Current streak: One win.

Week ahead: @ Pittsburgh (Mon), home vs. Rangers (Fri), @ NY Islanders (Sat).

Thoughts: Tonight’s game against the Penguins will determine how this road trip (currently 2-2-0) went, but Tampa Bay’s stumbles dictates that it wasn’t a disaster. The Lightning still have the advantage, though.

3. Carolina Hurricanes (28-24-8 for 64 pts; 60 GP)

Current streak: One loss.

Week ahead: Home vs. Rangers (Tues), home vs. Pittsburgh (Fri) and @ Montreal (Sat).

Thoughts: The Canes still have plenty of space in front of the surging Devils, but they didn’t make a compelling statement about their superiority by losing to them twice last week. They need to eke out points against three teams currently above them in the Eastern Conference standings this week or they might find themselves looking up at Buffalo or Atlanta.

4. Atlanta Thrashers (25-25-10 for 60 pts; 60 GP)

Current streak: Three losses.

Week ahead: @ Buffalo (Wed), home vs. Florida (Fri) and home vs. Toronto (Sun).

Thoughts: It hasn’t been a very happy 2011 for the Thrashers, unless you’re Dustin Byfuglien’s accountant. They only have five wins in 19 games since the new year began.

5. Florida Panthers (25-27-7 for 57 pts; 59 GP)

Current streak: One loss.

Week ahead: @ Ottawa (Wed), @ Atlanta (Fri) and home vs. New Jersey (Sat).

Thoughts: The Panthers aren’t totally out of the playoff run right now, but they shouldn’t be buyers during the trade deadline either. In fact, it would probably be wise if they tried to get something for Tomas Vokoun, unless they decide that he’s still their goalie of the (immediate) future.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sidney Crosby scored three times after Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff stopped him on a penalty shot early in the game and the Pittsburgh Penguins won their sixth in a row, beating the Flames 4-1 on Saturday behind backup goalie Brent Johnson.

Crosby made it 2-0 in the second period by putting in Chris Kunitz’s rebound, then scored his 200th career goal midway through the third when Paul Martin’s shot from above the circles deflected off Crosby’s stick.

Crosby completed his sixth regular-season hat trick and first this season by scoring into an empty net with 36.4 seconds left during a Flames power play in which Calgary created a two-man advantage by pulling Kiprusoff.

Crosby has 12 goals and 13 assists during a 12-game scoring streak. He has 18 goals overall.

The Penguins’ winning streak is their longest since they won seven in a row in October 2009.

Johnson made 30 saves during his first start since Nov. 10 against Boston, but lost his shutout when Rene Bourque scored his 11th goal and second in three games at 13:03 of the third.

Arron Asham also scored for Pittsburgh.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—Bobby Ryan had his second career hat trick to help Anaheim erase a two-goal deficit and snap Phoenix’s winning streak at seven games.

Ryan scored three of Anaheim’s five consecutive goals after Phoenix took a 3-1 lead early in the second period. The short-handed Ducks had lost six straight and were playing for the second night in a row after losing 4-1 at home to Chicago on Friday.

Rookie Brandon McMillan’s first NHL goal put Anaheim ahead for good at 4-3 with 13:21 to play. Jason Blake and Corey Perry also scored for Anaheim, and Ryan Getzlaf had four assists.

Shane Doan, Keith Yandle and Scottie Upshall and Derek Morris scored for Phoenix. The Coyotes lost in regulation for the first time in 10 games.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—Travis Zajac scored in the fourth round of a shootout, and Johan Hedberg made 40 saves for New Jersey in his fourth straight start with Martin Brodeur sidelined by a bruised elbow.

Adam Mair in regulation to help the Devils win for the third time in four games.

Danny Briere scored on a power-play goal in the third period for Philadelphia.

MONTREAL (AP)—Brian Gionta had two goals and an assist and Carey Price made 34 saves for the Canadiens.

Gionta set up Andrei Kostitsyn’s goal during a two-man advantage in the first, then added goals 4:20 apart in the second to help the Canadiens rebound from a 3-0 loss in Atlanta on Friday.

Kostitsyn had a goal and an assist, and Tomas Plekanec also had two points.

Jordan Leopold scored for Buffalo with 1:13 left.

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Kari Lehtonen stifled St. Louis again, Jamie Benn had another big goal and Dallas beat the Blues to sweep a home-and-home series.

The Stars rallied in the third period for the second straight night, beating Jaroslav Halak on two of their first five shots. Benn tied it and Loui Eriksson scored on a power play for the lead at 5:05.

B.J. Crombeen scored late in the second period for the Blues, who were the last NHL team to lose in regulation at home. St. Louis has 17 points in its first 10 home games, going 8-1-1.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Stephen Weiss scored the winner in the fourth round of a shootout for Florida.

Radek Dvorak scored on a penalty shot, and Dmitry Kulikov and Shawn Matthias also scored in regulation for the Panthers, who stopped a three-game losing streak. Florida went 0 for 4 on the power play and has failed to score in 37 straight opportunities.

Teddy Purcell, Dana Tyrell and Sean Bergenheim scored for Tampa Bay.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Erik Christensen scored the only goal in a shootout to lift the Rangers.

After losing in Tampa Bay on Wednesday, the Rangers shut out Florida on Friday and beat Nashville to close their three-game, four-day trip. The Predators have lost four straight, two in shootouts.

Ryan Callahan scored for New York in regulation, and Colin Wilson connected for Nashville.

OTTAWA (AP)—Mike Fisher scored twice and Brian Elliott made 29 saves for the Senators.

The line of Fisher, Alex Kovalev and Milan Michalek accounted for all the scoring, with Kovalev scoring the other goal and adding two assists and Michalek finishing with two assists.

DENVER (AP)—Greg Mauldin scored two goals to fuel Colorado’s four-goal burst in the second period, and the Avalanche had a season-high goals total to snap a three-game losing streak.

Paul Stastny, Milan Hejduk, Kevin Shattenkirk, David Jones and Matt Duchene also scored for Colorado. Kyle Brodziak scored twice for Minnesota, and Antti Miettinen and Matt Cullen added goals.

EDMONTON (AP)—Dany Heatley had two goals and an assist for San Jose.

Benn Ferriero and Joe Pavelski also scored for San Jose. The Sharks are 11-7-4 overall and 4-4-2 on the road after winning for the first time away from San Jose since beating Edmonton on Oct. 23.

Sam Gagner, Shawn Horcoff and Jim Vandermeer scored for Edmonton. The Oilers have lost eight of their last 10 games to drop to 6-12-4.

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Patrick Sharp scored for the fifth time in six games to snap a scoreless tie, Patrick Kane also had a goal and an assist, and Chicago finished it annual “circus trip” 4-2-0.

Corey Crawford started consecutive games for the second time this season and made 21 saves, after stopping 26 shots Friday in a 5-2 victory down the freeway in Anaheim.

He lost his shutout bid with 5:02 remaining when Anze Kopitar beat him high to the glove side with a screened 45-foot slapshot in the slot during a 5-on-3 power play. Crawford has allowed no more than two goals in any of his last six starts

PANTHERS (9-12-0) at LIGHTNING (13-8-2)

TV — SUN (HD)

Last 10 — Florida 4-6-0; Tampa Bay 6-4-0

Season series — This is the second of six meetings between the Sunshine State rivals. On Oct. 16, David Booth scored twice and Bryan McCabe had 4 assists in a 6-0 victory at BankAtlantic Center in Florida’s home opener.

Big story — Both teams will be looking to rediscover their offense. The Lightning had their five-game win streak snapped in a 6-0 loss to at Washington, while the Panthers dropped their third straight, 3-0 to the Rangers at home.

Team Scope:

Panthers — A power play, generally speaking, is supposed to help a team. Someone needs to explain that concept to the Panthers. Florida went 0-for-5 against the Rangers, making it eight straight games without a power-play goal. The Panthers have just two extra-man goals in their 12 November games — they’re 2-for-42 for the month — and all of five for the season.

They went 0-for-12 with the extra man on the three-game homestand that ended with Friday’s loss, and scored just three goals in the three games.

“Your best players have to be your best players,” coach Peter DeBoer said, “and in all three games, we had trouble scoring. Our best players didn’t get on the board and we were out-goaltended in all three. It’s tough to win games when that happens.”

Lightning — Friday was a disappointing reversal of fortune for the Lightning. After working so hard to climb to second place in the Southeast Division and believing they really could mount a challenge to the first-place Capitals, they fell apart.

“We just got outworked … plain and simple,” center Steven Stamkos told the St. Petersburg Times. “I thought we were soft all over the ice — the setups, the power play, in our own end. You can’t expect to win (playing like that), especially against a team like that.”

Said coach Guy Boucher: “I don’t think we could have beaten a bantam team tonight. … You can’t expect to beat a powerful team like that coming in with your lowest work ethic and lowest level of execution.”

Who’s hot — Panthers forward David Booth hasn’t scored in his last 10 games, but facing the Lightning, that could change. In 23 games against Tampa Bay, he has 12 goals. … Lightning forward Martin St. Louis hasn’t scored a goal in his last five games, but he’s found other ways to help — he has 8 assists in that span, giving him 21 on the season, third-best in the League.

Injury report — Panthers forward Steve Bernier, who hasn’t played since breaking his orbital bone when the Wild’s Brent Burns butt-ended him Nov. 12, is skating with a full cage and DeBoer said he could play during the team’s trip to California next week. Defenseman Jason Garrison missed Friday’s game with a lower-body injury. Defenseman Bryan Allen is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a broken foot. … The Lightning continue to be without forwards Simon Gagne (neck) andVincent Lecavalier (hand), as well as defenseman Matt Smaby (ankle).

Stat pack — The Lightning are the only Eastern Conference team to rank in the League’s top five in power play (fifth, 24.0 percent) and penalty killing (fourth, 87.0 percent). The Canucks are the only other team in the League to have both their special teams in the top five.

Puck drop — Thanksgiving is the worst travel time of the year and Panthers forward Bill Thomaslearned it the hard way. He was sent from the Panthers to the team’s AHL affiliate in Rochester, N.Y., on Thursday, but then was recalled Friday.

After fighting through the holiday crowd twice, Thomas was a healthy scratch for Friday’s game.

PANTHERS (7-8-0) at THRASHERS (7-8-3)

TV — FS-F (HD), SPSO (HD)

Last 10 — Florida 5-5-0; Atlanta 4-4-2

Season series —
This is the second of six meetings between these Southeast Division rivals. Atlanta took the first game of the 2010-11 season series with a 4-3 come-from-behind regulation win back on Nov. 3 at Sunrise, Fla.

Big Story — Atlanta kicks off its longest homestand of the season, as it will play its next six games at Philips Arena. Both the Thrashers and Panthers trail the first-place Washington Capitals by double-digit points already, so both clubs will want to get a winning streak going as soon as possible. Neither team has managed to string together more than two consecutive wins all season.

Team Scope:

Panthers — A quick glance at Florida’s record will tell you the entire story. With almost a quarter of the season schedule in the books, the Panthers are still desperately searching for some sort of consistency.

Florida had a chance to assemble a three-game winning streak on Saturday but that quickly slipped away with a lackluster 5-2 loss at Philadelphia, in which the Flyers opened the game with five unanswered goals.

“We hung with them for the first 12 minutes, but when you make mistakes against a great hockey team, the hottest team in the League, they make you pay,” Panthers coach Peter DeBoer said.

Thrashers —
Atlanta is experiencing the same inconsistency as Wednesday’s opponent. However, the last time the Thrashers won two in a row was back on Oct. 29.

It’s a bit of a frustrating situation, considering the solid performances from newcomers Andrew Ladd (team-leading 18 points) and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien (second with 16 points), as well as a promising sophomore season from forward Evander Kane, who is tied with Ladd for the team lead in goals with seven.

While Atlanta battled back to tie the Capitals 4-4 in the second period on Sunday, it let Washington run away with the game in the third, eventually falling 6-4 in D.C.

“We lost their defensemen too many times today, and they’re pretty good players back there,” coach Craig Ramsay said. “You just can’t do that.”

Who’s Hot — For Florida, center Mike Santorelli has a two-game goal-scoring streak and has three tallies over his last five games. … For Atlanta, Ladd had a goal and an assist in the loss to Washington Sunday and has notched at least a point in four of his last five games.

Injury Report — Panthers forward Steve Bernier did not play Saturday after getting hit with a stick to the face during the end of Friday’s game against Minnesota. Defenseman Jason Garrison remains day-to-day with a groin injury and forward Byron Bitz is on injured reserve recovering from sports hernia surgery. … Thrashers centers Bryan Little (concussion) andPatrice Cormier (broken foot) are on injured reserve.

Stat Pack — The most telling stat to describe the up-and-down season for the Thrashers has to be the discrepancy between their goals-for and goals-against average. As of Tuesday night, Atlanta was third in the Eastern Conference with an average of 3.11 goals per game, but was second-to-last in the entire NHL with a 3.61 goals-against average.

Puck Drop — Ramsay is getting to the point where he’s attempting everything he can think of to shake up his team. This included yanking starting goalie Chris Mason in the middle of Sunday’s game in favor of backup Ondrej Pavelec.

“We made it 3-2 and then coughed one right back up,” Ramsay said. “Whether it’s (Mason’s) fault or not at that point … it’s time to make a change. It’s time to do something to get the players a wake-up call.”
